Zhang Qi, deputy director of the Shanghai Culture and Tourism Bureau, confirmed that city officials had already met with Swift’s team to explore the opportunity.爱上海同城交友

"As for whether it will ultimately happen, it depends on the market and the attractiveness of our city. However, we are optimistic and think that there may be hope for this year," Zhang said in a statement to local media outlet The Paper.

They referred to top artists like Swift as “walking GDP” due to their substantial impact on tourism, consumer spending, and the local economy. To facilitate this, the Shanghai government has worked to streamline various processes such as visa approvals and customs regulations, making it easier for international talent to perform in the city.

Despite these efforts, hosting foreign performers in China remains a complex process due to regulatory and security concerns. The government has historically been cautious about granting permits for large-scale international events, particularly those involving foreign artists, due to issues of cultural influence and control.

Swift’s only stops in Asia during her record-breaking Eras Tour were in Japan and Singapore. However, her devoted Chinese fanbase has turned to alternative ways to experience her music, with many flocking to cinemas to watch her concert film, released in December 2023.

The competition among Chinese cities to secure international performers has intensified in recent months. In addition to Shanghai, other cities like Hangzhou are also eager to host top-tier artists.

Last month, a tourism official from Hangzhou expressed hopes of inviting Swift to perform there, following British singer Ed Sheeran’s announcement of six upcoming shows in the city in early 2024—the only stop on his China tour.

The southern island province of Hainan has also sought to attract global stars. Following the success of two sold-out Kanye West concerts in September, which generated an estimated 700 million yuan (around $95.5 million) in tourism revenue, the region has extended invitations to other rap superstars, including Cardi B and Travis Scott, for performances later this year.

Shanghai’s drive to host international concerts comes as part of a broader national trend, with Western megastars such as Mariah Carey, John Legend, Jessie J, and James Blunt also performing in Chinese cities in recent months.

With live music shows increasingly seen as a tool for economic growth, the hope is that events like a potential Taylor Swift concert could serve as a catalyst for further cultural and economic revival in Shanghai and beyond.
